The Monsters and Villains Project

In the Monsters and Villains project, students will dive into character design by reimagining iconic monsters and villains from movies or comics through digital illustration in Adobe Illustrator. Beyond focusing on technical skills and Colour Theory, this project challenges students to explore the deeper psychological roots of these characters—what drives them to “turn bad”? By analyzing the flaws, shortcomings, and motivations that define these villains, students will enhance their designs and develop a nuanced understanding of how visual elements like colour, shape, and form can communicate the complexity of these characters’ inner struggles. This approach allows for a richer, more empathetic portrayal reflecting their menace and vulnerability. Each character has been placed in a trading card format from the early 90’s.
