Fake Famous Digital Collage Project: Exploring the Illusion of Online Fame

Catherine A.

Collage has long been a powerful artistic technique for criticizing society, remixing reality, and constructing new visual narratives. In this project, the students harnessed the power of digital collage to explore the themes presented in Fake Famous, Nick Bilton’s eye-opening documentary about the manufactured nature of online celebrity.

Through this film, the students uncover the hidden mechanics behind influencer culture—buying likes and followers, the illusion of luxury, and carefully curated personas that blur the line between authenticity and fabrication. Social media has become a marketplace where influence is often more about perception than reality, raising essential questions about self-worth, success, and truth in the digital age.
